This complex three-phase project to transform the heart of EVMS medical campus included the design and construction of the Medical Education and Research Building, which houses the Leroy T. Canoles Jr. Cancer Research Center and serves the Medical School and School of Health Professions; renovations to the Brickell Library; and a complete, gut renovation of the existing vivarium located in the connected top floors of Lewis Hall and the Jones Institute.

Facilities include research laboratories and lab support; a 26,000 gsf vivarium for non-human primates; and a full array of medical education spaces and teaching labs, including a 25,000 gsf clinical skills/exam room suite. Teaching facilities include problem-based learning rooms, lecture halls, and flexible classrooms; also included in the program are offices and student service spaces, study areas, and active social spaces.

This is transformational. We now have an attractive, contemporary, wired first-class space for education, making a huge difference in the way we teach students. It’s really a whole new world for our students, faculty, and researchers.
